From all eternity, the Most High set apart one creature alone to be the dwelling-place of the Incarnate Word: the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God. In these four volumes of The Mystical City of God, the Venerable Mary of Ágreda sets down what it was given her to understand, through private revelation and long contemplative prayer, of the whole course of that singular life.
The Conception leads the reader through the hidden years of Our Lady, from her Immaculate Conception to the threshold of the Annunciation. The Incarnation opens with the Fiat at Nazareth and follows the Holy Family from Bethlehem into Egypt and home again. The Transfixion recounts the hidden years and the public ministry of Our Lord, and above all His Passion and Death, in which the sword of sorrow pierced His Mother's soul. The Coronation contemplates her final years as Mother and Teacher of the infant Church, her happy death, and her Assumption and crowning as Queen of Heaven and Earth.
Woven throughout are the counsels given by the heavenly Queen herself for the profit of every soul. Thus the whole Mystical City recounts the exaltation of the Daughter of the Father, the Mother of the Son, and the Spouse of the Holy Ghost.
