This indispensable edition of the Canons and Decrees of the Council of Trent has both the original Latin and facing English translations of these texts.
The Council of Trent was arguably the most important ecumenical council in the history of the Church after Nicea I. Everything was at stake – from the existential threat of Protestantism, to the dogmas, the Liturgy, and the praxis of the Church. The council lasted eighteen years, was the prelude to the Counter Reformation and exerted an incalculable influence on the Church, and indeed on the whole of Christendom, for the next four hundred years.
The Canons and Decrees of Trent are an indispensable guide to what the Church infallibly holds to be true on every major and historically disputed doctrine, with definitive clarifications of the Church’s position on the Creed, and such dogmas as Justification, Original Sin, Purgatory, Holy Orders, and the Eucharist. This edition is the first and only one to present the original Latin and the English translations as parallel texts.
The English translation is by Fr. Henry Joseph Schroeder OP (1875 – 1942), a world-renowned authority on the Ecumenical Councils and, at the time of his death, professor at the Dominican House of Studies in River Forest, Illinois.
